The Belfast
Giants are an ice hockey team located in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Though the
Belfast Giants and now members of the Elite Ice Hockey League, they were
initially members of the Superleague, which has been disbanded for some time.
Christopher Charles Knight considers himself knowledgeable of the Belfast
Giants. In fact, in October 2012, Christopher C Knight began the process of
purchasing the Belfast Giants from a man named Jim Gillespie.
Belfast Giants
are located at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In history,
Northern Ireland has been a place marred by near constant conflicts between
Protestants and Catholics. In order to avoid bringing violence into the Odyssey
Arena where the Belfast Giants play, the organization has banned certain things
from the arena. Banned items include clothing of certain colors, flags of any
types and items or signs that contain certain key phrases. According to Christopher C Knight, the
Belfast Giants quest to keep violence out of Odyssey Arena have thus far been
successful and the team has a healthy fan base. The desire is to build a
nonsectarian team in which the entire town can unite itself around.
The purpose of
the Belfast Giants’ rules and regulations about what sorts of things can be
brought into Odyssey Arena are based in a desire to avoid sectarianism.
Sectarianism can be defined as “bigotry, discrimination, or hatred arising from
attaching importance to perceived differences between subdivisions within a
group, such as between denominations of a religion, class, regional or factions
of a political movement.” According to Christopher C Knight, in Europe,
sectarianism is common in countries where Catholics once persecuted Protestants
and also in countries with there is a majority of Protestants that have made a
habit of persecuted Catholics.
